What is Improved Touring?
Improved Touring (or IT) is a highly competitive class of SCCA Club Racing with five subclasses, R, S, A, B and C. These subclasses are arranged roughly by power to weight ratios, ITR having the most power, ITC the least. Improved Touring "...is intended to allow a variety of popular, inexpensive cars to be eligible....". Modifications to the cars focus mainly on improved safety and handling and are relatively restricted on the drivetrain. Engines, transmissions and brakes remain mostly stock.
A short list of major engine modifications:
Cylinders bored to a maximum of 0.040" over
Compression ratio increased a maximum of 0.5pt over stock
Unrestricted header and exhaust (within noise restrictions)
Port matched intake and exhaust, no full porting
Tunable ECU
Emissions components removed
Oil and cooling system mods for reliability
Air filter and intake mods up to throttle body
Underdrive pulleys
Crank, rods, piston design and weight, cams, valve train, and intake manifolds all remain stock. This keeps the engine budget relatively low, but also makes power gains of +25% crank hp difficult but not impossible.
